You may have to undergo a health check up which might include blood tests, EKG and other tests to be cleared as fit for surgery

Procedure and Technique

The hip joint is a ‘ball and socket' joint in which the head of the femur (that is the long thigh bone) is the ‘ball' and the acetabulum or the cup of the pelvic bone is the ‘socket'. In THR the head of the femur is replace by a prosthetic ‘stem' and the acetabulum is fitted with a prosthetic ‘cup' to replace the damaged joint. The purpose of doing Hip Replacement is to replace a damaged painful joint with a mobile, stable and painless joint. There are two techniques to do this

Traditional technique -in which one long incision is made to access both the cup and the stem.
Minimally Invasive Technique (MIS) – in which two small incisions are made, one for the cup and one for the stem.

*** Not very case of hip replacement can be approached by MIS. The options will be discussed with you.

Implant

Implants are supplied by well known medical suppliers such as Zimmer, Johnson & Johnson, Corin, and Exeter System. The choice of supplier and the model will be decided by the surgeon depending on what is best suited for your hip.

Post Operative Protocol

  Post Op Day 1
Beside physiotherapy will be started to improve blood circulation and to prevent deep vain thrombosis
You will be able to sit up on your bed and may be stand on the bedside.

You will be asked to under take exercises to strengthen you leg muscles.

  Post Op Day 2
You will be able to start walking exercises with walking aid for body balance.
Continue with physiotherapy and muscle strengthening exercises.

  Post Op Day 3
Continue walking exercises and depending on your confidence in walking your discharge from the hospital will be planned.

Upon your discharge from hospital you will be provided with walking aid (cane, crutches or walker) if needed and asked to continue muscle strengthening exercises. You will be given an appointment for a follow up visit in 7 to 10 days from the day of surgery.
